What is a medicated sheepskin?
Sheepskins are widely used in beautifying and decorating your interior but did you know that nowadays they are also increasingly used to bring physical relief and help reduce physical complaints? These special furs are known as the medicinal sheepskin. Super soft, sheared short and ecologically tanned so they are perfect to use for longer sitting and lying periods.
What are medicinal sheepskins used for?
Medicinal sheepskins are used with people with different needs, mainly medical needs.
Medical purpose
These anti-decubitus sheepskin rugs can bring relief to people who have to sit or lie down a lot. Think of someone who spends a lot of time sitting in a wheelchair or doing sedentary work but also someone who is in a wheelchair for example for physical recovery or is less agile.
When sitting down a lot
Because you have to sit a lot, pressure sores (also known as bedsores) can develop. A health care coat can ensure that the pressure on the skin can be reduced and the risk of pressure sores is much lower.
When lying down a lot
Medical sheepskins offer a relieving solution for periods when you are lying in bed for longer, for example, or because you are lying in bed for longer due to old age. Even if you lie for a longer period (often in the same position) pressure sores can develop. You can place the sheepskin on your bed on top of, or underneath, your fitted sheet / molton. Place the fleece at the height of your hips, knees or shoulders for better support.
At otherphysical complaints
In addition, you can also use a medical sheepskin for back pain and other joint problems. The fleece will keep your muscles nice and warm.
Can you use a medicinal sheepskin for your pet as well?
Yes in fact, a sheepskin coat brings the same relief to your dog and cat as medical coats do for us. Often it is colder low to the ground and a dog or cat that has its cot or spot on the floor will feel more of the cold, especially if the four-legged friend is getting older or has joint problems. Put a health fleece in the bed so they can lie comfortably and warmly. View all sheepskins for dogs and cats here.

What is pressure ulcers?
Pressure sores are also known as bedsores and pressure sores. This phenomenon is a damage to the skin when there is prolonged pressure on the same spot. The pressure damages the skin and the tissue underneath. Sometimes it can lead to redness of the skin, but in more severe cases it can even lead to deep painful wounds.
Pressure sores can occur in anyone who spends a lot of time in bed or in a wheelchair. In the skin there are a lot of small blood vessels and due to the prolonged pressure of lying down and/or sitting, these blood vessels compress so that they can no longer adequately supply the skin and tissue with oxygen. The skin and/or tissue can then die, causing the pressure sores to develop.
Where bones are closer to the skin, pressure ulcers can develop more quickly. These include the tailbone, hips, elbows and ankles.
How does a medicinal sheepskin coat help prevent pressure sores?
The antidecubitus sheepskins have a short (+/-3cm) and dense wool. As a result, they distribute the pressure of the body evenly. This avoids the pressure on a point, such as your tailbone or hips, thus potentially reducing the risk of pressure ulcers.
How are the antidecubitus sheepskins tanned and processed?
Our medicated sheepskins, like all our sheepskins, are ecologically tanned, deodorized and double brushed. This means that no harmful or chemical substances are used that could affect the environment or you. With all our sheepskins we go one step further and they all meet the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 mark.
Can you wash a medical sheepskin?
We do not recommend washing sheepskins. They contain a natural substance called lanolin (wool fat). By washing the sheepskin, you wash the wool grease out of it, which can make it stiff and hard. The suppleness that was present at the time of purchase will not be able to be restored.
How to best maintain your sheepskin can be read on our blog on sheepskin maintenance.
